Comparison of Physicochemical Characteristics and Bioactivity of Olive Oil Mill Wastewaters from Traditional and Water-Saving ARA-Controlled Three-Phase Decanter

Olive mill wastewater (OMW) is one of the most environmentally concerning food processing effluents due to its phytotoxicity. Recently, several bioactive compounds with potential applications in food, pharmaceutical, and agricultural industries have been identified OMW. This study aimed compare, for first time, physico-chemical characteristics biological activity OMW obtained by two different types three-phase decanters: a traditional water-saving ARA decanter. DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, β-carotene bleaching tests were used investigate antioxidant effects. The inhibition key enzymes involved hyperglycemia hypolipidemia also assessed. A high concentration phenolic was found ARA-controlled system. Hydroxytyrosol resulted as dominant compound, content 502.3 mg/kg. extract decanter active FRAP test, value 67.23 µMFe (II)/g. moderate inhibitory against α-amylase, α-glucosidase, lipase enzymes. Data this evidenced that use allows obtaining characterized higher phytochemicals comparison those phase decanter, consequent activity. At same equipment reduction environment impact.
